Alejandro Sanrroman Vasquez
"Alex" "Cando"
February 4, 1928 - August 12, 2018
Born into this world February 4, 1928 to Librado Vasquez and Andrea Sanrroman Vasquez, in Bakersfield, California. He entered into eternal life, August 12, 2018. Dad attended local schools, however, was only able to complete the 8th grade at Lincoln Junior High. He, like many young men and women of his generation, were needed by the family to help support his parents, brothers and sisters by working in the fields of the Central Valley. Later, Dad was employed as a manager and Head Pasteurizer at Kirk Ragland Dairy. This was followed by an apprenticeship with the local painter's union, where he eventually earned the title of Journeyman Painter. He was a proud Union member his entire life. Upon retirement from the painting profession, he began a second career as Housing Inspector for the Kern County Housing Authority.
Dad believed in his community and always felt that it was the responsibility of its members to actively participate and become involved in its betterment. He overcame many of the societal barriers that existed at the time with love, compassion, hard work, sincerity and a wicked sense of humor.
In the early sixties, Dad was one of the five original founding members of the Fairfax Junior Baseball Club, which also included Virginia Vasquez (mom), Art Jones, Ewell Davidson and Ruben James. The Fairfax Junior Baseball Club continues to thrive today, providing summer baseball activities for the youth of our community. During those same years, Dad was elected to the Fairfax-Virginia Avenue District School Board. He remained in this position for sixteen years only to be succeeded by his wife, our mother, Virginia Vasquez. In his later years, he served as a mentor to many members of the community, often providing sage wisdom and encouragement. His love knew no bounds and his family will always cherish the memories of his beautiful smile, quick wit and extreme patriotism. His patriotism was undeniable and celebrated annually, for over forty plus years, with the 4th of July Block Party for the entire neighborhood at his house.
Alex was predeceased by his parents, Librado and Andrea Vasquez and his first wife, Virginia Vasquez; brothers, Albert and Aquilino Vasquez, Pete and Rufino Lemus and Sister Teresa Salazar. He is survived by his loving wife Cleotilde Vasquez and sister Librada Ramirez. Also his children SuzAnne Hernandez (Charles), Alex Vasquez (Julie), Lee Vasquez (Teri) and Marissa DeLa Mora (Francisco). Beloved surrogate sons, Peter Lomely, Ken, Mark and Rick Johnson. His loving grandchildren, Patrick, Angelica and Dominic Vasquez, Charley (Iris), Sarah Hernandez (Gordon Cooper), Marisol Mananes, Gael and Sebastian DeLaMora. Great Grandchildren, Lily, Olivia, Mia, Mila and Emma Hernandez and Avery and Cameron Cooper.
We will always remember our Dad with great admiration and love. His firm hand, generous spirit and high moral standard are embedded in our souls.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Optimal Hospice for the wonderful care and attention they provided our father during his final days.
