Alfred Dominguez Mendez

Al Mendez, 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 11th, 2019. Al was born in Bakersfield on April 15th, 1935 to Anastacio and Maria Mendez and was one of 10 children. He attended Guadalupe School and served as an altar boy at Guadalupe Church. He also attended Garces High School. Al proudly served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He met the love of his life, Martha Muro, while stationed at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, Ca they celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised 5 children together. Al retired from Kern Rock Co in 1997. He was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #93 in Bakersfield for over 40 years and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Al was a Jack of all trades who could build and fix anything. He was a master pool player winning many tournaments. He was hardworking, humble and kind and loved his family and friends dearly. Al is survived by his wife Martha, sons Alfred Mendez Jr and Gilbert (Janet) Mendez, Daughters, Rene Marquez, Rita Mendez and Rachel (Marcos) Garcia, grandchildren, David, Rueben, Marcos, Gabrielle and Sarah, great grandchildren, Mia, Mya, Isaac and Ethan, siblings, Salvador, Emma and Richard and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be David Marquez III, Rueben Marquez, Marcos Garcia III, Johnny Moralez, Eric Moralez, Theodore Feliz Jr., Eric Mendez, Mark Hernandez and Alfred DeLaRosa, Jr.. Honorary Pallbearers will be Alfred Mendez Jr., Gilbert Mendez, Marcos Garcia Jr. and Andres Nevares Jr.
We would like to thank Optimal Hospice for their care of our dad in his final days, his home health aide, Luis Flores, thank you for being our dad's "nurse". The office and staff of Dr. Jennifer Abraham and Dr. Betsy Matkovic with a special thank you to Dr. Matkovic for your kindness and care towards our dad, Carey Wagner and Alyssa Alejandro for always being so helpful to our family. A special thank you to The Fraternal Order of Eagles and Ladies Auxiliary, thank you for being a part of our family.
Visitation will be on Sunday January 20th at Basham Funeral Care 3312 Niles St. from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday January 21st at St. Frances Church 900 H St at 11:00 AM with interim at Union Cemetary 730 Potomac Ave. A reception will follow at The Fraternal Order of Eagles 1718 17th St.
