Cabrini Dell Leathers, 58, of Bakersfield, California, died peacefully April 17, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones.
Cabrini was born November 6, 1964 to Curl and Lordell Leathers in Bakersfield, CA.
She was raised in Bakersfield with her siblings Jim Leathers, Michael Hollis, Eric Leathers, Mary Leathers, Constance Sikes and Gwendolyn Mason.
Cabrini graduated from South High School in 1982 where she was a standout athlete in Basketball, Volleyball and Track.
She attended CSU Stanislaus on a basketball scholarship and later completed her BA at the University of LaVerne.
Cabrini married Troy Dwayne Phillips Sr and had her first son, Troy Dwayne Phillips Jr. She later married Clarence Hosey and they had a son, Caleb, and daughter, Mylia.
In 1987, Cabrini joined the Kern County Sheriff’s Department working first as a correctional officer, then as a deputy and court bailiff for 27 years. She made many lifelong friends there, including Judge and Mrs. Stuebbe whose calls and visits lifted her up during her illness.
Upon retirement, Cabrini returned to school earning a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Her second career was as a social worker at Kern Valley Prison.
Throughout her life, Cabrini’s spare time was devoted to church and family including her children, siblings, parents, nieces and nephews. She organized and sponsored many family vacations and outings and rightfully earned the title of “World’s Best Auntie.” When it came to family, she was generous beyond measure.
Cabrini accepted Christ at an early age and grew in God’s grace through adulthood. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Baptist Church under the direction of Dr. Tyree Toliver. There, she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, and attended Baptist Training Union. She later attended Ebenezer Baptist Church under the direction of Tyree Tolliver, Jr. and then joined St. Peter’s RCCM under the leadership of Dr. Oscar J. Anthony. She enjoyed her Bible Studies and continued her volunteer work there. Cabrini especially enjoyed her Monday Night Bible studies led by Charles and Linda Moore.
Cabrini is survived by her children, Troy Dwayne Phillips Jr and Clarence Caleb Jamal Hosey, grandson Levi Wills, her mother, Lordell Leathers and siblings Jim Leathers, Sister-in-law Sandra Faye Leathers, Michael Hollis, Sister-in-law Tammy Hollis, Eric Leathers, Mary Leathers, Constance Sikes and Gwendolyn Mason. She also leaves to mourn her passing many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Cabrini also leaves behind her cherished pet dog, Maya.
She was predeceased by her sweet angel, Mylia, her father, and other family and friends.
