In Loving Memory of CARL JENKINS TONEY, JR. March 15, 1953 - April 20, 2020

Carl Jenkins Toney, Jr., 67, of Bakersfield, California, departed this life on April 20, 2020, to his eternal home with Jesus, after a brief illness. Carl was the only son born to Carl, Sr. and the late Doretha Toney. Carl attended local schools and was a Driller basketball standout at Bakersfield High School. In 1971, he continued his education on a basketball scholarship at CSUB (then Cal-State Bakersfield). He had the distinct honor of being on the school's first basketball team, where he set many records and received many accolades. He was a proud alumni of CSUB and became a teacher. Carl married the love of his life, Brenda Faye Boyd, on August 11, 1973. They shared 46 years together. He loved her and she loved him. Most recently, Carl was ordained a Deacon at St. John Missionary Baptist Church., under the leadership of Rev. Antonio M. Alfred. He had a love for nurturing men into the Kingdom of God. He was actively involved in local and state Brotherhood Unions. Carl, aka "Rookie", was kind, humorous, intelligent, a down to earth individual, who loved a good game of dominoes. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Dodger, Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Clipper's fan. He loved his family and friends and was willing to be a transparent counselor and mentor to many, sharing life lessons and Godly wisdom. Carl leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Brenda Toney; three children, Christopher and Crystal Toney of Bakersfield, California and Brandon Toney of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandsons, Cashmere, Donovan and Tyson Toney all of Bakersfield, California; a daughter in love, Rachel Hernandez-Toney of Bakersfield, California; four sisters, Bertha Thompson of Litchfield, Arizona; Nellie Wright (Dwight), Sabrina Hunter, and Terri (Frank) Marantos all of Bakersfield, California; and many other family and friends, including his church family, St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Due to the COVID-19 virus, this and current mandates on social distancing and gatherings, a Celebration of Life Service will take place at a later date.
