With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Charles Joseph Nott, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, on August 3. 2024. Charles was a patient teacher, a skilled woodworker who loved creating things with his hands, a faithful friend, and a kind family man.
Born on January 10, 1931, in Calwa, California, Charles dedicated his life to helping others learn real-world skills and grow into self-sufficient adults. He earned his bachelor’s degree from San Jose State University and embarked on a 40-year career as a teacher in Bakersfield (mostly at Foothill High School). Charles, who earned a master’s degree in Industrial Arts from Fresno State University, advocated for hands-on classes which lead to rewarding careers in the trades. While teaching, he also served in several board positions for the California Industrial Education Association, including as its president in 1981. He represented his country honorably in the Korean War and proudly joined other veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2022.
Charles married the love of his life, Carol, in 1951, and they raised four children—Susan, Nancy, Ann, and David—in their Bakersfield home. Camping, backpacking, puzzles, and games were regular parts of family life. He enjoyed the company of friends on many motorcycle trips throughout the western United States. A lifelong reader, Charles especially enjoyed history and other non-fiction. Being a grandfather and great-grandfather brought him much delight. He is survived by Carol, his wife of 72 years; Susan Seals and her children Michelle and Ryan; Nancy Horn and her children Garrett and Linnea; Ann Ramsey, her husband John, and their children Elizabeth and Sean; and David Nott, his partner Ryan Farr, and David’s children Andrew, Lucy, and Carter; and seven great-grandchildren. Charles took immense pride in his family’s accomplishments, guiding his offspring through life’s challenges with wisdom, a keen sense of humor, and a strong Christian faith.
A memorial service with military honors will be held Monday, August 26, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin. A celebration of Charles’ life, where friends, family, and former students are invited to share their favorite memories and stories of Charles, will follow. We’ll miss you, Dad.
