Gerald Gates was born on August 12, 1944 at Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield, CA. He learned roofing from his step-father and started his own roofing business in 1974, which he ran successfully until he retired.
Gerald was known for his generosity in the community. He was a supporter of 4H and purchased lambs that had been raised by its members st the Kern County Fair. He also sponsored several youngsters in Boys Bicycle Racing, not only providing monetary support, but often driving them to their events as well. He also donated a roof to be used on a battered women's shelter.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Ruby Gates of Bakersfield, CA; his son, Dean Gates of Dallas, TX; his daughter, Deanna Gates of Bakersfield, CA; sisters, Florence Bradshaw, Ann Titsworth and Joyce Pressly; two grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ada Flores Gates; step-father, James Gates; and brothers, Buddy Earl and Jackie Gates.
