Gregory Louis Wood

Gregory L. Wood, 53, of Bakersfield, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020, at Mercy Hospital Downtown in Bakersfield, California. He was born June 21, 1967, in Evansville, IN, to Wayne and Brenda (Baugh) Wood. Greg grew up in Evansville, Indiana. He graduated from Central High School in Evansville in 1985. After high school, he attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he received his bachelor's degree in photojournalism. In 2011 Greg received a teaching credential. On November 6, 2004, Greg married Dawn (Leppke) Wood in Sanger, California. They were happily married for 15 years. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. He was an elementary school teacher for Panama - Buena Vista Union School District at Douglas J. Miller Elementary School. He loved teaching the kids and investing in their futures. Greg attended Valley Baptist Church, where he had many friends. Greg's deep faith in God and care for others were evident in his actions. He often lent a hand by helping members of their small group move or lay sod in their backyard. He especially enjoyed participating in the annual golf fundraiser. Greg had many interests and hobbies. He excelled at golf and bowling. He bowled perfect 300s on more than one occasion. He had a passion for photography. Greg is known for his deep love of the Chicago Cubs and Indianapolis Colts. He was a super fan! What Greg is best known for is his gentle and sweet spirit. Those who knew him always use the word "kind" to describe him. With that spirit, he always gave glory to God in all circumstances. He was very clear about the transformative power that Christ had in his life. Greg is survived by his wife, Dawn of Bakersfield, California, his daughters Emily Wood of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Sarah Wood of Bakersfield California, his mother Brenda Wood of Newburgh, Indiana, his brother, Mike Wood of Newburgh, Indiana, brother-in-law, David Leppke and his wife Laura, brother-in-law, Dale Leppke and his wife Erica, seven nephews and one niece. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Wayne L. Wood.
