Jane Ann Toller (Paullus)
November 29, 1927 - February 17, 2018Jane Ann Toller (Paullus) died peacefully in Bakersfield on February 17, 2018. She was surrounded by family, knowing she was loved and having lived life as a good and faithful servant to our Lord.Jane was a "wanna be" Irish woman. Over the years many have been treated to her Irish jokes and brogue. Unlike Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, who was born in Ireland, Jane was born in Wabash, Ind., to Julia Collier and Karl D. Paullus. She moved to California as a young child and grew up in southern California, graduating from San Pedro High School. She met the love of her life Frank Toller in Los Angeles. After they married, they moved to Omaha, Neb., Santa Maria, CA, and in 1974 relocated to Bakersfield.
A hallmark of Jane's life was her unselfish dedication to her family and her community. Following the death of her beloved Frank to cancer in 1981, Jane worked tirelessly to find a cure for cancer through her volunteer efforts with the American Cancer Society serving on the Board of Directors for both Kern County and the California Division. Originally a volunteer at Mercy Hospital, she was a life member and past president of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and an honorary member of the Catherine McAuley Society. She became one of the first employees of the Friends of Mercy Foundation, where the talents of this intelligent, vivacious, and funny woman made an impact on all those she encountered. Jane loved community theater and was a natural actress, in her retirement years was known to appear in local commercials.
She is survived by her five children: Mary Judith Zylstra (Pieter), Frank G. Toller (Colleen), Thomas P. Toller, Tami Toller Bohannon ( Jim), Timothy P. Toller; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; her sister Linda Fellows (Chuck) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jane was a charter member of the Lady Leprechauns and loved celebrating the Irish, so it is fitting that her Funeral Mass is scheduled for the eve of St. Patrick's feast at St. Francis Assisi Church on March 16, 2018, 9 a.m. A Rosary is at 8:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society, 1524 California Ave, Bakersfield, CA 93304 or Friends of Mercy Foundation, 551 Shanley Ct, Bakersfield, CA 93311.
