John Romero

May 10, 1950 — September 12, 2020

John "Papa" Romero (1950 - 2020)

John was born in Bakersfield, California on May 10, 1950, and went home with our Lord Jesus Christ on September 12, 2020.

John is survived by his wife, Fay Romero of 50 years. Three daughters, Yvonne Romero, Amy (Roderick) Rizo, Amanda (Fernando) Aguirre. Six grandchildren, Christopher Romero, Brandon Aguirre, Adam Aguirre, Issaih Wandick, Abigail Rizo, and Nathaniel Rizo.

John, the only son, is also survived by his four sisters, Ernestine Martinez, Sally Sanchez, Patricia Romero, and Maria Franco including numerous nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Emilio and Nettie Romero.

John began his vocational career in the carpentry trade in the 70s. He belonged to Carpenters Local 743 for 22 years. He started a new career in truck driving and received his Class A license and became employed at various local companies. He transported items such as produce, paper products, vehicle parts, and other items throughout the central valley including overnight long hauls through the California Coast. In the last eight years, he spent his time with The Home Depot Pro, delivering locally until 2019 before his cancer diagnosis. He was determined to go back to work and they were patiently waiting for him.

John loved to fish, watch football on TV, and watch old Clint Eastwood western movies on a Sunday afternoon after church. He also loved to play his guitar, watch YouTube videos on fixing things, and loved maintaining his many fruit trees.

He was most proud of his children and especially his grandchildren. John had a big soft heart when it came to his grandchildren. He didn't have sons of his own, but God blessed him with five grandsons and one granddaughter. He bent over backward for those kids and loved them with all his heart.

Although he was a quiet reserved man, he was very giving and generous. If he saw someone who was hungry on a street corner while on his truck route, he would pull over and either hand over a few bucks, give away his lunch or bring them back a meal. When he saw someone with a need and he could provide, he did.

John was a servant and follower of Christ. He spent the last few years ushering at Valley Bible Fellowship which he attended with his wife, children and grandchildren for over 26 years. He attended church every Sunday until his illness in September of 2019.
