Lynne Mercer, age 76, longtime resident of Bakersfield, passed awayon Saturdaymorning August 4 surrounded by loving friends. Lynne led an amazing life as a fabulous obstetrical registered nurse. Her intelligence and knowledge was appreciated by coworkers, physicians and patients alike.
Lynne graduated from Bakersfield High School and went to Fresno State where she received a BSN. She then joined the military and her proudest accomplishment was serving her country as a Captain in the US Army.
Her nursing career was of great importance to her. She delighted in helping to bring new babies into this world. She also had a stellar career at Bakersfield College where she taught in the Registered Nursing Department for many years. Some of her nursing students' highest marks were in obstetrics on the California State Nursing Board exams. She retired as a Quality Improvement Nurse at Kern Health Systems.
During her tenure at Bakersfield College, Lynne also earned a master's degree in education at Pepperdine University.
Lynne battled cancer for the past 18 months and faced it with great courage and dignity.
She is survived by a host of dear friends, including Georgia, Kathleen, Fred, Michele, Ronnie, Shelly, Debbie and Dan, and her beloved dog, Randy. Her father Robert Mercer, mother Dolores Mercer, and sister Barbara Mercer all preceded her in death.
She loved animals beyond all else, and her fondest memories are the good times she shared with the University Dog Park gang (human and furry).
Memorials in Lynne's name may be made to: Hoffmann Hospice, where she said she received compassionate, kind and gentle care; or the Bakersfield SPCA.
