Martha Muro Mendez 

November 22, 1935 – October 21, 2024 

Martha was born in San Pedro, CA to Jesus and Mary Muro and was one of five children. She attended local schools in San Pedro and worked as a beautician after high school. Martha met the love of her life, Alfred Mendez, while he was stationed at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro. Al brought her, in his words, to “God’s Country” which was Bakersfield, CA. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before Al’s passing in 2019. They have five children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Martha was a homemaker and volunteered in the cafeteria while her children attended Longfellow elementary making enchiladas for the school and became known as “The Enchilada Lady.” She later became a manicurist at Shears & Co. forming lasting friendships with “The Golden Girls.” Martha was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of F.O.E Auxiliary #93, she worked different branches of the office before becoming Madam President and is inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame. Martha was known for her wonderful sense of humor and was always the life of the party. She was a great cook known for her menudo, chili beans, potato salad and salsa among other great dishes. Martha was a devout Catholic and loved to pray her Rosary daily. We were blessed with the best Mama, growing up our home was filled with faith, fun, laughter and great food. Martha is survived by her brother Joseph (Cindy) Rojas, sons Alfred Mendez Jr and Gilbert (Janet) Mendez, daughters, Rene Marquez, Rita Mendez and Rachel (Marcos) Garcia, grandchildren, David (Rita) Marquez, Rueben (Maggie) Marquez, Marcos (Sarah) Garcia III, Sarah (Modesto) Rios and Gabrielle Garcia, great grandchildren Mia, Mya, Isaac, Ethan and Ariana as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be David Marquez III, Rueben Marquez, Marcos Garcia III, Modesto Ellano, Donald Mendez Jr., Eric Moralez, Theo Feliz Jr. and Mark Hernandez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Alfred Mendez Jr., Gilbert Mendez, Marcos Garcia Jr. and Joseph Anthony Rojas. We would like to thank the office and staff of Dr. Betsy Matkovic with a special thank you to Dr. Matkovic for your kindness and care towards our parents, Carey Wagner for always being so helpful and available to our family. Thank you to Pam Lancaster for always being just a phone call away, your help was immeasurable. Thank you to our mom’s caregiver Lisa for treating her with dignity and respect. Thank you to Donna for bringing our mom communion every week, you are an angel on earth. Thank you to the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Ladies Auxiliary for being a part of our family.
