Mary Louise Mayes, 85, passed away on Friday November 4th at home in Tehachapi, CA surrounded by her family. She was born on July 7, 1937 in Nicut, Oklahoma to Bart and Mishie Henson.
Mary grew up in Fortsmith Arkansas. Later her family moved to California. They were migrant farm workers, and they moved all of the time. Mary attended five different high schools in one year, Later, she asked her parents if they could stay in one place long enough for her to graduate high school, so they did. She graduated from Kern County Union High- school (BHS) on June 10, 1955. After graduating, she married the love of her life, Jack T. Mayes Jr. on June 11, 1955. On June 12, her parents and family were back on the road to Oregon to pick cherries.
Mary was a hard worker in everything she did. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and true friend to many. Mary was impressed by a secretary she saw in an office one day and decided she wanted to do that. She took a job with Greenfield School District as an aide in 1973. She worked hard and was promoted to Resource Technician. She made and printed almost every notice, packet and worksheet for the district.
Mary loved painting, crafts and visiting with friends and family. She would have family and friends over and they would play Kismet or Yahtzee for hours. Everyone had a great time.
She is survived by her four children: Jack Mayes, Carrie Mayes, Adrienne Stevenson, Mark and Christi Mayes, and by many grandchildren and great grand children.
Mary was preceded by death by her husband of 58 years Jack T. Mayes, Jr.
