Mary Ellen Valladares

November 18, 1931 — February 18, 2018

Mary Ellen Valladares 11/18/31 - 02/18/18

Mary Ellen was the eldest of five to the late Alfonso and Trini Gonzales. She graduated from Fairfax and Garces. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Joaquin Valladares, son Jack Valladares, son Jimmy Valladares, grandson Jimmy Chvala, and brother Al Gonzales. She is survived by daughter-in-law Beverly Valladares, son Larry Valladares, daughter-in-law Lisa Valladares, daughter Nancy Chvala, son-in-law Jim Chvala, daughter Donna Valladares, brother Raymond Gonzalez, and sisters Patsy Romero and Irene Gonzales. Mary Ellen fell deeply in love with Joaquin Valladares and together they raised their children Jack, Larry, Jimmy, Nancy, and Donna. Their son Jack died in 1982, and her love, Joaquin, died in 1998, followed by their baby boy Jimmy in 2004. In1968, Mary Ellenstarted working for the Bakersfield City School district as an educational aide. She was known as "Mrs. Val". She worked for 42 years at Bessie Owens School where her co-workers became family. It was there that she met her life long friends-Mrs. Rose Hoven and Mrs. Evelyn Ornelas. She was the matriarch of the family and her love for them could be seen by all. She loved her religion and took pride in raising her children and grandchildren in her beloved catholic faith. She taught religious education for many years at St. Joseph's church and her prayers were often called upon not only by her eleven grandchildren but also her many nieces and nephews. "Grandma Mickey" is what her seventeen great-grandchildren loving called her. They were her smiles and joy. Mary Ellen had a love for reading, dancing, and singing, but her greatest love was being with her family. She was her family's biggest fan and she loved to watch all their sporting events, school concerts, spelling bees, and the generations of graduations. She was very social and would join in on any celebration; no occasion was too small. She lived a full and happy life with family, friends, and love. She will be missed by all.
