M.H. Hughes

June 21, 1932 — July 24, 2021

M.H. Hughes joined his Lord and Savior on July 24, 2021. He was born in Opal, Arkansas on June 21, 1932 to Monroe and Mollie Hughes. He joined the Navy in 1952 and served in the Korean War. In 1953, he married the love of his life, Earlene Fowler. They moved on the Navy base in Long Beach, CA. After leaving the Navy they returned to Mena, AR and then decided to move back to CA a few years later. M.H. took a job at Waynes Dairy and Tony, his son, arrived not long after in 1956. In 1959, they were back in AR for 6 months and their daughter, Janet, arrived. After Janet was born they came back to Bakersfield. M.H. continued to work at Wayne’s Dairy and Laura Scudders. In 1962, Kathy was born. M.H. started his trucking journey in 1978 which continued until he retired in 2018. Family gatherings were an important part of MH’s life. His Arkansas brothers and kids got together as much as possible. The family loved going to Avila Beach every summer. Kathy thought the ocean was the “biggest swimming pool” she had ever seen. Tony was mad that they never got to stay in the “big trailer”. Janet like getting in the water with her Dad. M.H. enjoyed when they made trips back to Arkansas to visit his brothers, particularly when his kids and cousins raced in the grass! He loved trucking more than you could imagine. He was able to travel and see many things and always had a story to tell when he got back. His grandchildren were able to take trips. He taught them how to shift and look for exits. Zingo’s Café was his second home/office for the trucking business. We enjoyed Sunday mornings when he brought biscuits and gravy for us from Zingo’s. According to him, it was the best food in town. M.H. was caring and giving in any way he could. He loved the Lord and loved his family. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. M.H. was proceeded in Death by his Wife, Earlene, brother Delbert and sister-in laws Jewel and Ida Earlene Hughes. He is survived by his son, Tony Hughes, daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Mike Stevens, daughter, Kathy Manes, grandchildren: Kamille Hughes, Cameron Manes, Fred and Carol Hughes, and Zach Hughes. One brother, Jack Hughes, and many beloved great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
