Nelda Jean Higgins

Nelda Higgins, 84, passed away at home on January 20, 2023, in Bakersfield, CA. She was surrounded and cared for in numerous ways by people who knew and loved her. Nelda was born on June 14, 1938 in Escondido, CA, to Lou Morris and Edrine ("Edrie") Morris. She spent much of her youth in Arizona and moved to Southern California soon after her first marriage.She started her career as a secretary and Administrative Assistant in Bakersfield, Ca. in 1963, working for Title Insurance Company, where she met her second husband, George "Mike" Higgins. She went on to work at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Cal State Bakersfield until retirement.Nelda married Mike Higgins in December of 1964, and together they raised 3 children: Kevin, Becky, and Jim Higgins.Known to many as "the Energizer Bunny", Nelda was best known for her constant energy, ability to organize anything (and everyone), servant's heart, passion for camping and travel, and her love of her family, her Redeemer, and her church. She participated in triathlons and ran half-marathons, as well as one full Marathon. She attempted to climb Mt. Whitney in her 70's, making it to Base Camp at over 12,000 ft.Nelda is survived by her sister, Edna; children Kevin, Kevin’s wife Susan, Becky, Jim and his life partner Denise; brother and sister-in-law Bob and Ann; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; as well as innumerable friends from, literally, around the world. Nelda is preceded in death by her father Lou, her mother Edrie, and her husband, Mike, who we fully expect is being tidied up, put right, and re-organized as this is being written.
