Peggyrose Urner

Peggyrose Urner (Peg) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, February 2, 2017. She was born in Bakersfield, California, on April 20, 1930, to Phil and Daisy Urner.Peg graduated from East Bakersfield High School where she was active in Girls League and the arts. She earned a B.A. degree in Art from the University of California at Santa Barbara in just three years and studied Lettering at Art Center School in Los Angeles and Photography at Bakersfield College.In 1955, Peg became the Staff Graphic Artist at Kern County Library in Bakersfield. Her job was to advertise the books and materials available at thelibrary. She made posters and displays which rotated between the branches throughout the county. She traveled from branch to branch to set up displaysfor the featured books.In 1960, she won a Merit Award from National Tuberculosis Association for a design she submitted for Christmas Seal.Peg later earned her Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University. She began teaching at Highland Elementary School in Oakland, California, where she taught first and second grades. She loved teaching there and used her considerable art skills to enhance the experience of her students. She even wrote an original song honoring Martin Luther King for them to perform for their parents. When she returned to Bakersfield in the late 1970s to be closer to her aging parents, she became a substitute teacher and a teacher/tutor in the Bakersfield City School District.She was the second of Phil and Daisy's five children. The others are Jim Urner, Don Urner, Jerry Urner and Phyllis Herrick (Urner). She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Jim and Jerry.Peg was a unique and caring person who always put her heart, soul, and creative ability into everything she did. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, and aunt to her loving family and a gift to her friends and students.
