Phillip James Wellwood, age 60, has entered into the presence of Jesus Christ, with a renewed body and spirit. Though he knew healing would not be found on this side of eternity, he courageously battled a rare form of brain and spinal cord cancer. On November 2nd, 2020, cancer lost the battle as every tumor was denied entrance through Heaven's Gate.
Born May 30, 1960, in San Mateo, CA to Theron H Wellwood and Martha Montalvo, Phillip lived in San Jose, CA until he entered the US Army in 1977. He proudly served his country for three years stationed at Camp Eschborn in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1981 he married Bobbette DeWitt of Weston, Ohio, and she survives him along with their daughters Jenna Redd, spouse Elliott, and Jillian Moss, spouse Everett, of Bakersfield. Also surviving are the three grandchildren he cherished, Emma Redd, Rhett Moss, and Elijah Redd as well as siblings, Harry Wellwood of Rigby, Idaho, Ronald Wellwood and Joseph Wellwood, of San Jose and Mary Ann Canning of Galt. Phillip was pre-deceased by his parents and siblings, Kent Wellwood and Carol Wilson.
Having moved to Bakersfield in 1992, Phillip was employed by Consolidated Asset Management Systems (CAMS) where he earned the respect of his colleagues for his dedication and expertise in power generation.
The hole his death has left in the hearts and lives of his family is immense but will be filled by continuing his legacy of hard work, love of family, camping trips, Saturday morning pancake breakfasts, silly pranks, and over-the-top Christmas mornings.
A viewing will be held Wednesday, November 11th, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Basham & Lara Funeral Care, 343 State Ave., Shafter.
