Phybee Johnson passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the age of 90 years.
Phybee was born on March 28, 1928 at Madill, Oklahoma to Josiah Lewis and Addie May Owens. Her father was a full blood Chickasaw Native American and was listed on the Dawes Roll. She joined three brothers in the Lewis family; Josiah, Charles and Milford. At 10 months of age she lost her mother and the family of Emerson James and Anna Mitchell James became her foster parents. In this family she gained a brother, Emerson James and Thelma James. She attended the Carter Seminary Boarding School (a boarding school for girls of Native American heritage) from September 1936 through June 1938. When her foster parents died Phybee went to live with her foster sister, Thelma James Carroll and her husband, Whit Carroll and their children; Nadine, Pearl, Wilma, Lorene and Letha.
Phybee met her future husband, William Ebb Johnson in Johnson Corner, Oklahoma in 1942. They married in June 1946 in Oklahoma following Ebb's discharge from the U.S. Navy after the end of WW II. They moved to California to be near Ebb's parents and her foster brother, Emerson James in 1948. Ebb passed away in 1997 after 51 years of marriage.
Phybee is survived by her two daughters; Pamela Houser (Mike) of Bakersfield, California and Vicky Reed (Bill) of Windermere, Florida. She is also survived by two grandchildren and one grandson is predeceased; Kip Bivins of Bakersfield, California and Noelle Marion (Todd) of South Hadley, Massachusetts, Chad Albitre passed away in 2004. Phybee had three great grandchildren; Brooke Marion of Belchertown, Massachusetts, Reed Marion of South Hadley, Massachusetts and Addie Sarad of Los Angeles, California. Phybee's brothers all predeceased her; Josiah, Charles and Milford.
Phybee enjoyed talking with people about her Chickasaw Native American heritage, loved dancing with her husband, enjoyed Country music and meeting with her Lunch group including Pam Houser, Chris Buford, Vivian James, Pat Rush, Shirley Buford, Jackie Peavyhouse and Rosemary Foster. She always watched sermons by Dr. David Jeremiah on television. On the Friday before Phybee passed away she had a fun evening of karaoke at Harvest Steakhouse. She treasured her relationships with her nephews Charles Lewis and Joseph Lewis; her cousins Christine James Buford, Emerson James (Shirley) and Donald James (Vivian) and her Carroll nieces; Nadine, Pearl, Lorene, Wilma and Letha.
