Reynaldo Penalosa Sencio

January 6, 1945 — May 8, 2022

Reynaldo Peñalosa Sencio, 77 January 6, 1945 – May 8, 2022 Reynaldo Peñalosa “Rey” Sencio, 77, went home to the Lord on May 8, 2022, in Mojave, California. He was born January 6, 1945, on Camiguin Island in the Philippines, to the late Alfredo and Evelina Sencio. Rey grew up in the Philippines, the second of nine children. He followed in his father’s footsteps and chose to build a career around his love for numbers. He majored in accounting in college and became a licensed certified public accountant shortly after graduation. He met the love of his life, Eleanor Mayol, and they married in 1970 in the Philippines. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage before his passing. Rey was devoted to his wife and often performed harder chores so Eleanor wouldn’t have to. His love language was acts of service, and he made it clear how he felt about his family through his actions. Together, Rey and Eleanor raised three children—Roy, Rhea, and John. Rey saw an opportunity and took the chance to move to San Jose, California, during the early 1980s. He spent 12 years working for Wells Fargo Bank and eventually joined the accounting department of Kindred Pharmacy, where he stayed until his retirement in 2013. Rey lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for many years and combined his lifelong love of sports with enthusiasm for the local teams. He was an avid fan of the San Francisco Giants, the Golden State Warriors, and the San Francisco 49ers. If a game was on while he was working, Rey always had the radio going. The habit carried on at home, too, with him listening to many games while doing chores around the house. He loved his home to be neat and tidy and always seemed to be doing something to clean or keep things in working order. When the radio wasn’t playing a game, he usually had a record or CD playing. He had varied interests, from the crooners like Sinatra, to the Beatles to Kenny Rogers. After retirement, Rey and Eleanor decided to move to Bakersfield, where they could be closer to their son, John, and his family. Working together, the couple transformed the barren backyard of their new home into a lush, functional greenspace with a variety of fruit trees, blooming plants, and vegetables. They also joined a Bakersfield religious group, Couples for Christ, to share their Roman Catholic faith with one another and the community. Rey preferred to stay close to home, though he did enjoy road trips to visit his children and grandchildren all around California. He loved to be around his family and enjoyed family gatherings. Whether he was the host or guest, or when eating out with family members, you can bet he’d be having a juicy medium-rare steak. He considered being a loving grandfather his greatest achievement and thought “Grandpa” was his most prestigious title. Family was the most important thing to him. Rey was also proud of his children and having put them all through college to see them successful in their chosen careers with families of their own. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Sencio; children, Roy (Jenny) Sencio, Rhea Sencio, John (Aireen) Sencio; grandchildren, Zoe Sencio, Aiyana Sencio, Arin Sencio; and siblings, Sonia Sy, Maria Lanete, Cristina Guardiario, Graciano Sencio, and Adonis Sencio. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Alberto Sencio, Armando Sencio, and Alfredo Sencio, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bakersfield. Interment will immediately follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bakersfield around 11:30 a.m. Full details are available at www.bashamfuneralcare.com.
