Robert "Bob" Edward Minner died unexpectedly in Bakersfield, CA on March 27, 2016 at the age of 77.
Bob is survived by his wife, JoEllen; adult children: Malcolm; Michael and spouse Cindy, and two grandchildren Mia and Matthew. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Carlton W. and Nellie E. Minner and brother, Carlton "Sonny" W. Minner Jr., all of Bakersfield, CA.
Bob was born on September 30, 1938 in Bakersfield, CA to Carlton and Nellie Minner. Bob attended East Bakersfield High School where he excelled at track and field and established a school record for the shot put in 1956. The Bakersfield Californian nicknamed him "Big Bob Minner" in their reports. Following high school Bob entered the Army/Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA. Soon thereafter, Bob attended Bakersfield College. Bob's passion for photography led him to attend Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA. Bob entered the United States Army in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1963. He was stationed in Germany with the 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 3rd Artillery. While in the military, Bob was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, a Gunner Badge with Artillery Bar, and as a Sharpshooter with a rifle.
Bob married JoEllen in October 1965 while working for Southern Pacific Railroad. After marriage, Bob and JoEllen moved to Berkeley, CA for a job with Sante Fe Railroad. Over 2 years the couple welcomed two children into their home, Malcolm and Michael. Soon Bob set about coaching the boys in soccer and helping the sport grow as a coach and leader.
Bob was an accomplished bookkeeper and helped many local companies over a long career. Bob was very generous with his time and dedicated many hours to local soccer programs and efforts. In 1982, Bob was part of the first youth club team to travel to Europe. In 1985, Bob led his sons and many young men on a second trip to Europe. Bob enjoyed hiking, cycling, and walking the bluffs with his grandkids. Bob was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, his pets, travelling, and a good meal.
Viewing will be held April 21, 2016, 5-8p.m. at Basham Funeral Care. A funeral is scheduled for April 22, 2016 at 11:30am at Basham Funeral Care, 3312 Niles St, Bakersfield, CA. A military service will follow at 2:00pm at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin, CA. The family would like to thank the staff at Kern Medical Center for their efforts and care.
