Ronald Cleveland Mercer (Merc Dawg) Jr., 48, passed away on October 31,2019 in Bakersfield, California. He was born October 28, 1971 to Ronald Cleveland Mercer Sr. & Cynthia Mercer-Towne.

Ronald grew up in Olar, South Carolina. He graduated from Denmark-Olar High School in 1989. After graduating high school, Ronald joined the United States Marine Corps where he dedicated 26 years of faithful service. He retired from the Marine Corps on October 31, 2015 as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. During his time in the United States Marine Corps, Ronald mentored and inspired many of his fellow Marines and was highly decorated. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-Saudi Arabia, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal- Southwest Asia, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal-Iraq, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait Liberation Medal- Kuwait, Sharp Shooter Rifle & Pistol Qualification Badges.

Ronald married his spouse Jillian Mercer in Kailua, Hawaii on December 29, 2006. They enjoyed doing everything together. It was rare to see them apart.

Ronald is survived by his spouse Jillian Mercer, daughter Khloe Mercer, and son Zane Smith-Mercer of Bakersfield, CA; mother Cynthia Towne of Olar, SC; brother Franklin (Belle) Hewitt of San Antonio, TX; sister Barbara (Jesse) Glover of Denmark, SC; sister Penny Martin of Valdosta, GA; sister Becky Mercer of Barnwell, SC; and brother Craig Mercer of Barnwell, SC.

Ronald was preceded in death by his father Ronald Cleveland Sr., brother Anthony (Tony) Mercer, and sister Pattie Mercer.

A visitation will be held at Basham Funeral Care, 3312 Niles St., Bakersfield, CA 93306 from 5:00-8:00pm on November 13, 2019. A funeral service will be held at Basham Funeral Care at 10:00am November 14, 2019. Burial and graveside services will follow the funeral at 1:15pm at Bakersfield National Cemetery 30338 E. Bear Mountain Road. The family welcomes all friends and relatives to attend.
