Selene Turner was born May 24, 1958 to Emma Jean Taylor (Roberts) and Fred Roberts in Bakersfield California. Selene was the oldest of three children and the only daughter. She attended Bakersfield High School and graduated with the class of 1975. After high school, she attended El Camino Community College in Torrance, California, where she received her Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration & Management in 1980. Selene went on to further her education at Long Beach State and Colorado State University.
In July of 1987, Selene gave birth to her son Philip Strohs. She relocated back to Bakersfield in 1989 when Philip was two-years- old. She had a brief career in the medical field until she settled at Frito Lay/PepsiCo Inc in 1995. She worked tirelessly as an On-Machine Seasoning operator for 24 years until she retired in 2018.
With the help of her parents, she raised her son Philip and devoted her life to her family, church, and job. She was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church where she took part in children's ministries as a Sunday School teacher and overseeing the children's choir. She was the president of the Adult Church Choir and a member of Soul Communicators Singing Group. She led tours at Frito Lay for class trips and was always ready to volunteer in her son's classroom at school.
Selene loved family and spending time with family. She had a passion for traveling, eating good food, jewelry, singing, and music. Selene departed this world at the age of 61 on January 16, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, CA.
Selene is survived by her son Philip Strohs, his wife Shanoa, and their son Liam; her mother Emma Jean Roberts; her brother Gerry Roberts and wife Diana and family; and her brother Renard Roberts and wife Donna and family. She is preceded in death by her father Fred Roberts.
Selene had a determined spirit and was dedicated to her family. Her hard work ethic and passion for God and music will live on through her son Philip, her family, and the lives of people she influenced.
