Deacon Sidney Toliver Jr.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9
Sidney Toliver Jr. was the sixth child of seven children born to the union of Sidney and Bettie Toliver in Prescott Arkansas. Although Sidney had older brothers, it has been said that when his parents took that first look at him Sidney favored his father so much that he was given prestige title of Jr., so even in birth, his parents knew they had someone special on their hands!
Sidney obtained his education in the segregated school system of Prescott Arkansas. He attended Blevins Technical School through the 12th grade, however he left school before completing to take a job at a Texarkana ammunition plant. It is in Texarkana Texas where Sidney met the gem of his life, Pearlie Mae Lyons.
Sidney and Pearlie were married August 6, 1953. In 1955, Sidney and Pearlie moved to Wasco California where they raised their seven children. Sidney and Pearlie united with the Truelight Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor P.A. Bedford. Sidney came from a family strong in Christian faith and he accepted the Lord as his Savior early in life. On Sunday July 20, 2014 Sidney re-dedicated his life to Christ under the leadership of current pastor of Truelight Baptist Churcb, Rev. Marvin Cockrell. For all who were in attendance that day, heaven truly rejoiced! Sidney actively attended services, sang in the male chorus and on November 6, 2016 was ordained as a Deacon and faithfully upheld his Christian duties until the end of his life on June 22, 2020.
Sidney was a well known fixture in the Wasco/Shafter farming community for 55 years. Over the years he worked his way up from a farm hand to being known as one of the best "water men" around. Sid, as he was called by his farming friends could look at the land and easily plot out how much water was needed, how often and when the best time of the day was to "run the water". Sidney worked decades for L.A. Grant and Sons in Wasco and retired from Furrow Farms in Shafter in November 2012 at the age of 78.
