Verla June (Sloan) Brown, 83, of Bakersfield, CA, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of December 9, 2021, after a years long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Verla was born on April 6, 1938 to her parents, Dessie and William Sloan, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. She was born into a large family and has had many siblings who have since predeceased her. Verla grew up and was raised in Blackwell, Oklahoma and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1956 as the Salutatorian of her class.
After high school, Verla attended Bethany Nazarene College where she met Stephen Scott Brown whom she married on February 17th, 1960. They were married for 42 years until the passing of Steve in March of 2002. Verla graduated from Bethany Nazarene College in 1960 with a degree in Education and taught elementary school off and on for 43 years in Texas and California. She retired from Palm Avenue School in Wasco, CA in 2008.
Verla was a devout Christian woman who loved our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and was a great example and loving influence to those around her and especially to her children; Greg, Jeff and Sondra. We are profoundly saddened with her passing, but take solace in knowing that we will be with her again one day in heaven. We were blessed to have had such a loving and wonderful mother!
Verla is survived by her oldest son Greg, and his wife, Melissa, son Jeff, and his wife, Kris, and daughter Sondra, and her husband, Tim, also numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 21st at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bakerfield, California where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Stephen Scott Brown.
