Zelma Elayne Roux
October 28, 1932 - October 21, 2017
Our beloved mom, Zelma, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family one week prior to her 85th birthday. Mom was born on October 28, 1932 on the family farm delivered by a midwife in Eddyville, Nebraska to parents Lyman G. Vance, Sr. and Ada M. Vance. Her family moved to Los Angeles in 1937 and then to Bakersfield in 1943. Growing up she was an avid roller skater, going to the rink whenever she could. Mom was a switchboard operator at the Padre Hotel (the switchboard can be found on the second floor at the Padre) and also was a telephone operator for Pacific Bell. She later was an office manager. Mom first married in 1950. That union produced four children. Then in 1961 she married her soul mate and best friend, Louis Roux. There, two more children were added to our family. Mom and Dad just celebrated 56 years of marriage on September 3, 2017.
Mom was a consultant to many friends and family members due to her extensive knowledge of the law. We always told her that she could have been an attorney.
Mom was a collector; she had research on family, friends and any information that related to history and current events. Mom also loved the Raiders, especially Derek Carr, and NASCAR; she has a picture of Kevin Harvick on the same wall with the rest of the family.
Mom instilled in her children the love of life, of one another and to believe in ourselves and to never give up on our dreams. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will carry with them special memories and teachings they learned from their grandmother. To know Mom, to have been loved by her, and to have been a part of her life is a blessing beyond belief. She made each individual person feel special in their own way.
Mom is predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Lyman Vance Jr., Leni Cody (brother-in-law, John Cody), Kenneth Vance, Alice Vance, grandson Dominic Chavez and son-in-law Michael Marroquin.
Mom is survived by our dad, Louis Roux, children Diana Marroquin, Michael McLane (Peggy), Patty Langston (Skip), John Roux (Missy), Lou Ann Roux, Debbie Taliaferro (Jimmie), grandchildren, Mark, Richard (Margaret), Scott (Katrina), Michael John (Lisa), Joshua, Ronnie, Christopher (Austin), Ryan (Mariana), Louis, A.J. (Crystal), Sarah, Jimmie III, Kyle and Natalia; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jaylene, Eileen, Logan, Jacob, Canyon, Taylor, Joseph, Jacob, Ayden, Ava, Jaxxon, Matae'a, Ryan Avery, Bryson; brothers-in law, Denny (Stevie), Rick (Marlene); extended family members, Toni Henry, Esther Archuleta, Holly Burns and Tarrah Lindahl.
We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Optimal Hospice, Marissa, JoAnne, Teresa, Bertha, Stephanie and Chaplain Michelle for your genuine care and compassion toward our mother and family.
A chapel service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 10am at Hillcrest Memorial Park, followed by a private graveside service for the immediate family.
Because Mom loved her Raiders and Kevin Harvick, please feel free to wear your NFL team's shirt or your NASCAR driver's shirt.
